OV Hawks sits down with Assistant Coach/Athletic Director Tim Walsh

January 26, 2010

Last night, Ocean View topped the Segerstrom Jaguars 78-62. The Jaguars adjusted well to the blackout, immediately contesting OV to a rather concerning degree. Don’t believe me? Just look at the 1st quarter score: Ocean View 19, Segerstrom 15. Ya, the Hawks pulled away, but it is very clear that this league is just a few short years away from being a two horse race.

Still don’t buy it? Ask Coach Tim Walsh, who is also the Athletic Director at Ocean View. Mr. Walsh has organized multiple CIF (and State) Playoffs and championship runs, and has brought a new identity to the school’s athletic program. I had the privelage of sitting down with Mr. Walsh and he answered a few questions about the game, and the team in general;

OV Hawks:This wasn’t your everyday situation when it comes to basketball; in correspondence to the difficulties in rescheduling last night’s game, how did the coaching staff readjust the focus of the team?

Coach Tim Walsh: Well, I think that historically, whether its right or wrong, we felt pretty confident in Golden West League play. And we came into that game feeling better. But just in that first three minutes of the game, Segerstrom made it very clear that they wanted to make it a tough game. That kind of helped us, as a coaching staff, refocus and us, as a team refocus. We understood, a little bit, about how they wanted to create off of penetration, and we really wanted to focus on that in practice, and I think it made a big difference.
