In its 40th anniversary, Ocean View hosts the Tournament of Champions yet again with a new slate of some of the nation’s most sought after recruits. The TOC has many successful alumni, including NBA superstars Russell Westbrook, Jrue Holiday, DeMar DeRozen, and Darren Collison, and collegiate alumni, including Anthony Brown (Stanford) and Avery Johnson (San. Fran.).
This year, the tournament hosts Orange Lutheran (Ranked # 2 in Orange County by O.C. Register, 11th by L.A. Times ), Corona Del Mar (#3 by O.C. #19 by L.A.), Loyola (#20 in L.A. Times), Crespi (#24 L.A. Times), Foothill (#4 by O.C.), El Toro (#8 O.C.) Ocean View (#9 O.C.), Long Beach Jordan, Narbonne, Clovis West, Clovis East, San Bernadino, and Temecula Valley.
Some of the premier players in this year’s field include Gabe York of Orange Lutheran. The 6’2” guard is ranked 19th in the nation at his position, and has been awarded a 93 overall rating by ESPN. Via ESPN:
York is one of the purest shooters in the nation. He has a feathery touch out to 22-feet and he gets great lift on his shot. To compliment his shooting he has gotten much better taking defenders off the dribble. He has a nice burst in transition and he can finish with a flair for the spectacular-usually a thunderous dunk. He excels in transition where he can attack the rim or hit one of his potent pull-up jump shots.
York has received plenty of offers, highlighted by Arizona, Connecticut, USC and Washington.
Another talented player comes out of Clovis East; Kevin Bailey, a 6’5” Small Forward, ranked 90 overall by ESPN and 42nd at his position, is one of the most dynamic players in the tournament. Bailey has a great ability to score in transition, but can also beat defenders off of the dribble.
Bailey committed to Portland after considering Stanford, UCLA and Washington.
The championship game is tonight at 10 EST between Loyola and Foothill. You can watch the game online, just head over to OVTOC.com for more info.
The host team Ocean View, has come a long ways since the beginning of the tournament, and has effectively developed into a more complete, defensive and aggressive team.
Standout player analysis after the jump.
